Vintage Carpathian Wool Kilim Rug, 1970s–1980s - Forest Medallion, 6'5" × 4'7"

A striking vintage handwoven wool kilim sourced from the Ukrainian Carpathian region. Its bold composition features three large geometric medallions surrounded by rhythmic horizontal bands and smaller diamond-shaped motifs in rich burgundy, black, forest green, orange, red, yellow and cream.

The stepped diamonds, repeating shapes, and balanced bands reflect the geometric design traditions associated with Hutsul and wider Carpathian weaving. Subtle variations in the lines and motifs reveal the hand of the weaver, giving this one-of-a-kind textile its distinctive character.

The colors remain bright and beautifully preserved. There are no holes, noticeable stains or significant structural flaws. One small, neatly executed repair patch is present and shown in the photographs. It blends naturally into the design and is barely noticeable when the rug is displayed.

During its previous storage in Ukraine, it came into contact with dried grass. Although the rug has been thoroughly cleaned, a few tiny fragments of natural plant material may remain deep within the weave. They are barely noticeable and do not affect the rug’s condition, appearance or use.

Overall, this rug is in beautiful vintage condition. Minor variations and gentle signs of age are consistent with its handmade character and history and do not detract from its striking appearance.

This distinctive piece can be displayed as a floor rug, wall tapestry or meaningful example of Carpathian textile heritage.
